Is it Possible to Shop Consciously?

Pocket Bum Bag in Saddle from the HFS Collective Fall Lookbook

Up until this point, many of my posts about vegan fashion included items from fast-fashion favorites like ZARA, H&M, and ASOS. Truth be told, for many years of my life, these stores were my heroes for vegan items on the cheap. However within recent years and with the help of some really great, eye-opening documentaries (ahem, The True Cost), I realized seeking out fashion that is ethical and sustainable is just as important as seeking out fashion that's vegan and the truth is, these fast fashion brands are as far from ethical and sustainable as you can get.

Let's Face It...

I'm not sure why, but having these types of conversations is often really hard. No one wants to make others feel uncomfortable, sound preachy, or seem "holier than thou." Of course, none of us know all the answers. We can really only see what's two feet in front of us... yet sometimes we choose not to see the things in front of us because it's simply inconvenient to do so. It doesn't match with what we know (or think we know) and already hold true in our minds; and thus, it's easier to simply disregard it and go along with our lives as we always have. Most of the time it's harmless and doesn't matter much in the grand scheme of things whether or not we opened your minds to whatever new, small bit of information that comes our way... (whether it be your boyfriend cheating on you or you're allergic to pineapple and thus now need to stop eating your favorite fruit)... but what happens when this information is so important, so dire, that the risk of not changing actually proves more painful than the risk it'd take to change?

This article (from Hipsters for Sisters blog) explains really well something that's, while at a clearly visible two feet in front of us, is somehow something a lot of people simply prefer to not see or acknowledge...perhaps because people don't want to change their ways, or maybe it's too much of a burden to take responsibility for... Regardless, it's important to understand what's happening to our planet and why.

Comforting Hot Cacao

Hot Cacao Recipe
Photo: South Beach Primal
Okay. I know, I know, I know, I said I wouldn't post any food or drink recipes.. but this one, I just couldn't resist! The perfect pick-me-up for a cold, late afternoon in December, hot cacao was exactly what I needed today to lift my spirits...and lift my spirits, it did! This recipe, which I adapted from Valentina Zelyaeva's blog (who has tons of great juice and smoothie recipes) was WAY too good to keep all to myself.

A Vegan's Right to Snickers: Three Delicious Halloween Treats Everyone Can Enjoy

Halloween circa early 1990s. That's me on the far left.

As a kid, for me the real joy of Halloween wasn't in dressing up like famous figures or Hollywood movie stars, nor was it rush of adrenaline received while being spooked by neighbors who took the holiday all too seriously. No, it was none of these things. For me, Halloween was about one thing and one thing only: the candy.

Juicing, A to Z

I don't usually post about food or juicing since I originally intended for this blog to be strictly about vegan fashion, however, I recently found this article in the Wall Street Journal and thought it was too good to not share. So for those interested in juicing, this is a great read on how to take your juices to the next level (not to mention some cool new cocktail concoctions!)

WWD Interview with Stella McCartney: The Future of the Fashion Industry

Stella McCartney talks with WWD about the future of the fashion industry. She says the fashion industry is in danger of being behind other, more progressive industries that are embracing a philosophy of environmental responsibility into their ethics and actions. Designers need to start making smarter choices for fabrics, and think twice about what leather really is and how its production affects the environment before including it in their collections. I couldn't agree more.

Leaning into It: Making the Switch from Leather to Faux

Vegan Fashion: Making the Switch from Leather to Faux Leather

In the past, I've never had a problem with wearing leather. I cherished my "real leather" handbag and fawned over the beautifully constructed "real leather" jackets and boots I saw in magazines or fashion blogs. Yet as I've recently set foot on my journey of "leaning into veganism" (thanks, Kathy Freston), the issue of wearing leather has become more and more problematic for me as both a vegetarian and animal lover.

Cacao Mint Chip Smoothie

Image Source: Stacey's Paleo Kitchen Blog

When it comes to deserts, nothing beats chocolate mint chip ice cream. That's what I thought, at least, until I found this vegan Mint Cacao Chip smoothie recipe (which I adapted from Cocoa Bliss Smoothie recipe from Whole Foods).

This Mint Cacao Chip smoothie is my favorite "go-to" recipe for when I have a sweet tooth. Better yet, this recipe is made of all natural and wholesome ingredients and is 100% vegan and gluten free.
